051: Newfie

051-300HEADLINE: Hipster and Guy From Baltimore Make Newfie Jokes!

Is newfie a derogatory term? Gavin, Rob and Dana have the conversation that two thirds of them aren’t qualified to have. Are there newfie jokes? Well, kind of. Have you seen NewfieJokes.net? It might have some of the worst jokes around.

What do you call someone from Baltimore besides “crack head”? Brooklynites are easily hipsters. Have you seen The Hipster Olympics?

You know, I never see what all the hype is about? Could someone please tell me why the term Newfie is derogatory, or at least why they think it is?
For almost half my life now I’ve been living outside of Newfoundland and Labrador, living in such places as Tel Aviv, England, and presently Australia.
When I meet someone who makes reference to me being a Newfie, I’m pleasantly surprised. I like the fact that someone on the other side of the world knows something about this small island, with less people than their smallest neighbourhood, which I call home.
It doesn’t hurt to tell anyone the starts with the Newfie jokes that we (Newfoundlanders) make up all the jokes to entertain the simple minded.

I think that was the point we were taking. It's offensive because people say it's offensive. It's not like people used to buy and sell Newfies like slaves, right?

I do not think that the word Newfie is derogatory, I am a Newfie, and I love the word. It is my opinion that the people who find this word offensive aren't your typical Newfies and are a little high strung. As part of being a Newfie we accept things like this and even Newfie jokes, all with a good heart and a smile. I am not a fan of the term Newfoundlander, but that is just me. I am not trying to be someone I am not by sounding like someone I am not. I am a Newfie, not a Newfoundlander! Newfoundlanders are high strung, politically correct people who live in the Island portion of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. I am anti-politically correct and light hearted. I am hard to offend, and I love Newfie jokes. I AM A NEWFIE!!! Are you?
